Escape from Paris

We spent our last day in Paris foot-slogging our way around the left and right banks of the Seine. We ended up at the Louvre and after waiting 30 minutes in a queue to get to the start of the queue to enter the museum, we followed the masses to see everybody taking a photo of some old painting of a woman, so we thought we’d do the same.

Then last night, we celebrated our last night in Paris with a dinner cruise up and down the Seine, ending at 11.00 pm at the base of the Eiffel Tower.

This morning saw us pack up and check out of the hotel. We managed to save half a taxi fare by walking half way to the Gare de Lyon (railway station) before we managed to get a taxi – seem to be very hard to get in Paris – our hotel  clerk couldn’t get us one either.

Picked up a hire car at the railway station and we now owe our marriage to the person who invented the GPS satellite navigation system – we couldn’t have gotten out of Paris in one piece without it. We even managed to do it without attracting any road rage - just did what the locals do - if you want to stop and have a snack, just park on the footpath and put on your hazard lights.

Drove 90 minutes to Reims and had lunch near the fabulous and historical cathedral there.  Drove south through Epernay to Etoges en Champagne where we are spending tonight in a historical chateau – see photo. More on Epernay and the Champagne district of France tomorrow.
